Port Jefferson, NY

The Incorporated Village of Port Jefferson, New York, is located in Suffolk County on the North Shore of Long Island. Known as Port Jeff to locals, the village covers three square miles of land with a population of about 7,800 people.

Port Jefferson was first settled in the 17th century with its original Native American name of Sowasset, meaning “place of small pines” and “where water opens.” It remained a rural community until developing in the 19th century into an active shipbuilding center. Finally incorporated in 1963, Port Jefferson today relies largely on tourism. Harborfront Park was completed in 2004, turning an old shipyard site into an open public space. The annual Port Jefferson Village Dickens Festival has been held every year since 1996.
